Scholarship Description: These scholarships have been established by the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies to allow graduates to pursue study of benefit to the Muslim world. The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies is a Recognized Independent Centre of the University of Oxford. It was established in 1985 to encourage the scholarly study of Islam and the Islamic world. The Centre provides a meeting point for the Western and Islamic worlds of learning. At Oxford it contributes to the multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary study of the Islamic world. Beyond Oxford, its role is strengthened by an international network of academic contacts.

Tenure of award:Awards are made for the full duration of a student’s fee liability for the agreed course. If your scholarship is offered for a course lasting more than one year, the continuation of your scholarship each year is subject to an annual renewal process based on satisfactory academic progress.

Value: 100% of university and college fees, and a grant for living costs (the rate in 2012-13 was £12,900).

CAPREx Postdoctoral Research Fellowships for Ugandan and Ghanaian Students 2013

The University of Ghana in partnership with the Makerere University and the University of Cambridge invites application for CAPREx  project. CAPREx (Cambridge Africa Partnership for Research Excellence) is a new programme funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York. Under this program 10-15 research postdoctoral fellowships are available to study biological sciences and engineering at university of Ghana and social sciences and humanities at Makerere University. Fellow will also spend some time at university of Cambridge in UK.

Studyubjec St(s): Research areas within the broad fields of biological sciences and engineering (for the University of Ghana) and social sciences and humanities (for Makerere University) will be considered for CAPREX fellowship applications.

Eligibility:
-Fellowships are open to all PhD-holding members of staff of the African partner universities in Ghana and Uganda. However, preference will be given to researchers who completed their PhDs less than 10 years ago (early career fellows), or 10 to 20 years ago (mid-career fellows). Part-time staff can be considered, if they provide evidence of being research active. They should be interested in focusing on a research career long-term.
-Applicants must be from the subject areas specified above, for each African university.
-Female staff is strongly encouraged to apply for these fellowships.

Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: This scholarship is open for the citizens of Uganda and Ghana.

Scholarship Description: The UG in partnership with the Makerere University, Uganda and the University of Cambridge, UK has received funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to implement the Cambridge Africa Partnership for Research Excellence (CAPREx) project. The project is focused (among others) on developing post-doctoral academic excellence in biological sciences and engineering (for UG) and the social sciences and humanities (for Mak). It also intends to build upon Cambridge’s existing collaborations with both universities to enhance their research excellence and promote the recruitment and retention of the brightest academic staff at these institutions.

Number of award(s): The CAPREx Programme is pleased to invite active researchers at the University of Ghana, Legon and Makerere University to apply for 10-15 academic research fellowships available in 2013.

Duration of award(s): Scholarship is offered for up to 6 months.

What does it cover? The focus of the CAPREx programme will be on research training/mentorship/collaboration relevant to Ghana and Uganda, which is where the research projects will largely be carried out. CAPREX fellowships will, however, allow for an average of four months (ranging from 1 to 6 months) to be spent at the University of Cambridge. Fellowships will include travel (to be arranged from Cambridge) and subsistence costs (£1,700 per month) for the agreed duration of stay in the UK. Funds will also be allocated for each CAPREX fellow to attend one international conference, ideally in Europe or North America. CAPREx fellows will also be eligible to apply for an ‘Alborada Research Fund’ (available at the University of Cambridge to be awarded to Cambridge-Africa researchers on a needs basis, with awards ranging from £1,000 to £20,000 per application).

Selection Criteria: Applications will be reviewed and graded by a selection panel comprising representatives from the three CAPREx partner universities, in the relevant subject areas (i.e. biological sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities). Panel decisions about applications will be made by email, telephone or videoconference consent. Reviewers may pay particular attention to the following criteria:
- Quality of preliminary application
- Quality of references
- Research experience (e.g. journal/book publication record, grants won)
- Commitment to pursuing an academic research career at the African university of interest
- Ideas for research project and potential for mentorship/collaboration with CAPREx partners.
